Following on from a small local session in National Science Week, a team of experienced CIPPS communicators from UQ, USyd and ANU travelled to Questacon on 28 November to run an interactive engagement activity with school groups and the general public.

“…it was so much fun…I was so excited to get that opportunity to go. It was a life goal I didn’t really realise I had. And what was really good about this was we weren’t just thrown into the woods. We had really good training from Questacon.”

Patra Petrohilos, PhD Student

The day involved skill sharing and training from Questacon’s Learning Engagement team where our members gained valuable insight into the science of science communication, before heading into Questacon’s QLab interaction space where our scientists got to connect with 842 visitors including seven different school groups across the day, sharing their knowledge and career journeys.

Our Peptide detectives activity involved visitors using pipe cleaners to build models of peptides, and understanding their structure and function. Our spider exoskeletons made for great conversation with visitors very interested in the discovery of novel peptides in nature that could be harnessed for future medicines and eco-friendly pesticides.
