Cornelius is currently using directed evolution to optimize the solubility of chimeric Adenylation (A) domains from non-ribosomal peptide synthesases. These chimeric A domains, when reconstituted into the NRPS machinery, will enable the introduction of different amino acids into non-ribosomal peptide antibiotics to modulate their characteristics.
