Turn-on fluorescence for protein tracking

Lead Chief Investigator: Elizabeth New, The University of Sydney

Collaborating Chief Investigators: Gottfried Otting

Summary

Tracking proteins in cells requires exquisite sensitivity at a level only offered by fluorescence. The commonly used fusions with GFP-type proteins, however, present major modifications that can interfere with biological function. This project will explore and optimise the performance of a new bioorthogonal reaction where a genetically encoded non-canonical amino acid is post-translationally modified to generate a fluorescent label.

Relevance to the Centre

This project aligns with the Centre’s aim to track peptides and proteins in cells.
